Amid the vibrant atmosphere of HKUST, a unique bond formed between two generations of students: Johnson Leung, a proud alumnus (BSc in Biology, 1994), and Anson Wong, a promising and versatile student-athlete (BBA in Marketing). Their stories intertwined through a shared passion for sports and a commitment to excellence.
Johnson graduated from HKUST as part of its first undergraduate cohort. His fondest memories include vibrant activities with hallmates from diverse backgrounds and the thrill of competing as a member of the inaugural track and field and basketball teams. “Those experiences were invaluable. They shaped my character and instilled in me the values of teamwork and perseverance,” Johnson reminisced.

After over two decades in the shipping and investment industries, Johnson ventured into entrepreneurship, focusing on data-driven intelligence in the container shipping sector. He faced numerous challenges while building his business, yet the rewards of assembling a capable team and generating value kept him motivated. His success did not just benefit him; it allowed him to give back to his alma mater.
Driven by his strong passion for sports, Johnson recognized an opportunity to enhance competitive sports at HKUST and decided to contribute to the Alumni Endowment Fund (AEF) as one of the pioneering supporters. “I want to inspire the next generation. I believe that financial support can motivate talented athletes to choose HKUST and invigorate our sports culture,” he explained.

Anson’s journey in football began before he could even walk, nurtured by his father, a passionate fan of the game. By the time he joined the top youth clubs in Hong Kong, his passion was undeniable. His hard work paid off when he became an important member of the Hong Kong team that achieved a historic 4th place at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022. “Playing against Manchester United this year was unforgettable,” Anson recalled. “The defining moment came when I realized I could pursue a professional football career in the Qingdao Hainiu in the Chinese Super League.”

As one of the recipients of the AEF Sports Scholarship, Anson balances his studies at HKUST with the demands of being a professional footballer. Although he faces challenges adapting to a new environment, his determination and time management skills enable him to do his best in both academics and sports.
“The scholarship has motivated me to push harder in every aspect of my life. It has provided invaluable recognition and encouragement, inspiring me to strive for excellence in both my academic and athletic pursuits. It reminds me that my hard work does not go unnoticed and reassures me I’m not alone on this journey,” he said. He utilized the scholarship to enhance his training and academics, upgrading the equipment and tools needed for both.
