Why are we inviting alumni to give?

You may wonder why we are reaching out to alumni for support when HKUST also receives donations from corporations and wealthy individuals. While these contributions are valuable, they tend to be irregular and are often earmarked for specific capital projects — like new buildings or state-of-the-art laboratories. In contrast, donations from alumni, although individually smaller, have the potential to create a significant impact when pooled together. Every gift, no matter the size, contributes to enriching the university experience and supporting initiatives that directly benefit our students. Your generosity can make a real difference.

Where is my donation going?

Your generous donation will be allocated to projects supported by Alumni Endowment Fund (AEF). The principal of the endowment fund is maintained in perpetuity, and only the income generated from investment of the principal is utilized and expended, allowing your contribution to continue benefiting future generations of students and initiatives for years to come.

HKUST charges tuition, and the HKSAR Government provides subsidies. Aren't those enough?

All universities in Hong Kong charge tuition fees that fall short of covering the full cost of their operations.  In fact, tuition fees only account for a small portion of the expenses associated with educating each student. HKUST cannot achieve its lofty goals by relying solely on government grants and subsidies. To elevate ourselves from great to truly world-class status, we need diverse funding sources that provide the flexibility to support our most critical initiatives.

I'm only in the early stages of my career and can only afford to donate a small amount. Is this of use?

Absolutely! If each of our 100,000 alumni donates just $50 a month, it would collectively generate an impressive $60 million each year. Every gift, regardless of size, plays a crucial role in driving our mission forward at HKUST! Your support not only makes a significant cumulative and long-term impact, but also demonstrates your trust and commitment to our institution’s vision.

Is my contribution tax-deductible?

Yes! Donation of HK$100 or above to HKUST is tax-deductible in Hong Kong. For one-time gift, a donation receipt will be issued within two months of the funds being received by the University. For monthly gift, a donation receipt will be issued annually at the end of the fiscal year, typically in April.

When will my credit card be charged?

Your credit card will be charged immediately for one-time gifts once you have completed the online payment transaction. For monthly gifts, our Finance Office will charge your credit card on a monthly basis.
