The Student Emergency Fund helps students struggling with unexpected financial challenges, ensuring they can continue their studies. Embodying the spirit of global citizenship, this fund is available to all students, both local and non-local students. 

The fund was established in 2016 by alumni Terry Tsang and Terence Tsang, who generously contributed HK$2 million to support students in financial distress. Their commitment to helping others stemmed from a personal experience during their undergraduate years at HKUST, when they faced one of the life’s most devastating events: the loss of their father. As the sole provider for the family, his passing thrust them into immediate financial hardship, leaving them struggling to cover their tuition expenses. Fortunately, the Student Affairs Office stepped in, providing them with emergency funds that offered vital support during their time of need.  This experience ignited their passion for giving back, inspiring them to create a fund that would assist students facing similar challenges.

The cumulative donations received from alumni are treated as the principal, which remains preserved in perpetuity, with only the income from investments utilized.  This ensures that AEF provides a consistent and sustainable source of funding to support top-priority initiatives that enrich students’ university life.
