Sonia Lo, a 2021 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Business (BIBU), exemplifies the spirit of giving back within the HKUST community. Her university journey is marked by a commitment to mentorship and community engagement. Currently working in the healthcare industry, she remains dedicated to giving back to her alma mater.
Sonia's dedication to mentorship stems from her own experiences as a mentee at HKUST. Inspired by the guidance she received, she joined the Alumni Mentorship Program of the HKUST School of Science after graduation to support students navigating their paths. “I want to help students understand that uncertainties about their future are normal,” she shares.
In the mentorship program, she met with her mentees quarterly for face-to-face discussions and maintained contact through messages and calls for interview practice and CV reviews. They also set specific goals for the year at the program's start.
Her mentoring journey has been rewarding, as she witnesses her mentees achieve their goals. “Seeing my mentees get into their desired industries or studies was incredibly fulfilling,” she adds.
Back when Sonia was studying at HKUST, one of her most impactful contributions was co-founding the Biotechnology and Business Students' Committee. “We aimed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application,” she reflects. This initiative connected students with industry professionals, providing essential networking opportunities.
Starting this society during the COVID-19 pandemic tested Sonia's leadership and adaptability. “We had to think creatively to engage members virtually, highlighting the importance of teamwork and problem-solving,” she says.
Sonia’s dedication was recognized through the HKUST Diversity Scholarship and the HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund’s Reaching Out Award. “These scholarships motivated me to further engage in community service,” she explains.
Through the Diversity Scholarship, she created activities fostering connections between local and international students, enriching the campus community. “Diversity enhances our university experience, and I wanted to create inclusive spaces,” she states.
In addition to community service, Sonia’s exchange experiences at Stanford University, Korea University, and the National University of Singapore significantly broadened her horizons. “At Stanford, I learned about design thinking, which I applied in my capstone project,” she explains. In Korea, she embraced the challenge of a new language and culture, enhancing her global citizenship and adaptability. During her internship in Singapore, she gained insight into Southeast Asia's diverse working culture, where professionals from various backgrounds collaborate.
Sonia's diverse exchange experiences inspired her to seek job opportunities in various countries after graduation, giving her the courage to step out of her comfort zone. She secured her first job as a management trainee in Singapore, where she gained valuable work experience working across different cultures.
Looking ahead, Sonia aims to continue her commitment to mentorship and community service by establishing a local chapter of a global organization called the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) focused on empowering women in healthcare. “I want to create platforms with a mission to further the advancement and impact of women in the business of healthcare,” she explains.
She encourages HKUST students to embrace personal growth opportunities. “Step out of your comfort zone and explore different interests. University is a safe space for that,” she advises. She emphasizes that the experiences gained can significantly impact future career paths.
To fellow alumni, Sonia stresses the importance of giving back. “Sharing your experiences with current students can profoundly impact their lives,” she encourages. Many students face uncertainties in transitioning to the workforce, and alumni guidance can make a difference.
Sonia Lo’s journey at HKUST showcases the power of education, mentorship, and community engagement. Through her leadership and commitment to helping others, she embodies the HKUST spirit and inspires us all to strive for personal growth while making a meaningful impact.
