Despite graduating with an accounting major, Carrie did not look for a stable accounting career but instead devoted herself to social enterprise. She is currently Associate Director at Playtao Education, a social enterprise that addresses Hong Kong's growing education needs with a focus on children from low-income families; and Manager of Education projects at Social Ventures Hong Kong, a venture philanthropic organization which supports social purpose organizations and social enterprises in Hong Kong.
She is also responsible for a variety of initiatives to help the disadvantaged in society: she established the China branch of Design for Change, an international movement that empowers young children to be the catalyst of change; co-founded Go Inside Caféwhich showcases social projects and arts and crafts created by youth; published DreamMag, a free magazine featuring social enterprise projects of young people; and started a voluntary service group called Sowergift.
"I am proud of being a HKUST graduate – the university gives you lots of opportunities. I did a lot of voluntary work during my studies. I went on an overseas exchange to Lancaster University in the UK. I also got a Working Holiday Visa for Australia, where I found a job in a coffee shop – so that's where I got the experience for the café!” reminisces Carrie.
