In the fast-changing world of STEM education, Anthony Lam, a young and dynamic HKUST graduate (PhD program in Nano Science and Technology; MPhil in Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship, 2020; BSc in Biotechnology, 2018), stands out for his innovation and entrepreneurship. Anthony and the other co-founders have established Centauri Optics, a startup enhancing STEM learning by innovative optical technology, to transform their laboratory academic research into a real-world application.

The Spark of Entrepreneurship

Anthony's entrepreneurship journey was started by his passion for STEM education and desire for impactful learning experiences. The mission of Centauri Optics is to provide affordable, high-quality portable microscopes for students and educators, which can help inspire the next generation of scientists. Its product, Miniscope, represents a new standard in portable microscopy, combining high power and resolution in a compact design that fits in the palm of a hand.

“Our competitors largely focus on programming and robotics; we fill a niche in scientific exploration,” he notes.

Miniscope distinguishes itself by focusing both product quality, and engaging user experience. Unlike traditional laboratory-grade microscope, Miniscope is designed to be very user-friendly, making it suitable for classroom environments. Notably, it can be easily connected to a smartphone, iPad, and monitor with just one plug, making it a convenient tool for interactive learning.

Commitment to STEM Education

Centauri Optics also actively contributes to STEM education through workshops and competitions. The company's design thinking and optical workshops are aimed at igniting curiosity among students, fostering a hands-on learning environment. Additionally, the company co-hosted the “Technology Changes Life: Dream Cup,” a Hong Kong-wide science camp, which was designed to nurture innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills among primary and secondary students.

Preparing for Success at HKUST

Anthony credits his entrepreneurial success to the resources and support provided by HKUST. During his studies, he participated in various startup competitions and received invaluable mentorship from professors, especially his PhD thesis supervisor, Professor Kam Sing Wong, who guided him through his research and development phases.

Anthony recalls, “The University offered a wide array of funding opportunities and an extensive network of resources that were crucial as I transitioned from academia to entrepreneurship.”

In addition to his academic pursuits, Anthony is actively involved in the HKUSTSU Kendo Club, where he participates in regular practices and competitions. This engagement allows him to foster lasting friendships with fellow members and enjoy the sport immensely. He also takes part in water sports at HKUST, such as windsurfing, which further enriches his university experience and allows him to maintain a balanced lifestyle to better manage his academic and work commitments.

Looking Ahead

As he approaches the completion of his PhD, Anthony envisions a future where Centauri Optics expands its product line and continues to innovate. “In the next few years, we aim to diversify our offerings and explore new markets, making high-quality scientific tools accessible to more sectors and industries,” he shares.

Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, Anthony says, “It is important to embrace uncertainty and be resilient. The journey is filled with challenges, but each obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow.”

Anthony's story is a testament to the power of education, innovation, and perseverance. Through Centauri Optics, he is not only advancing the field of STEM education but also inspiring future generations to explore the wonders of science. His journey exemplifies how academic foundations can lead to entrepreneurial success, making a lasting impact on society.
