Peter Yeung (2008 BEng in Computer Science), a dedicated alumnus with over 13 years of service in the HKUST Alumni Association (HKUSTAA) Executive Committee, has stepped into the role of President for the 2025-2027 term starting from December 2025. Peter's journey reflects the enduring spirit of HKUSTAA, also known as A1 (meaning “Alumni First”), which has played a pivotal role in fostering connections among over 110,000 alumni across the globe.

As one of Hong Kong's most vibrant alumni networks, A1—guided by the heartfelt slogan “We Are Family!” and the vision “Alumni Inspire Alumni”—has long served as a bridge between alumni, current students, and the University. It promotes lifelong relationships, meaningful engagement, community service, and mutual inspiration, creating a cohesive platform where members support one another like family.

Cherished Memories from HKUST Days

Reflecting on his student life, Peter recalls the vibrant campus atmosphere that fueled his passion for knowledge. "During my first few weeks at HKUST, I was deeply impressed by the campus and its atmosphere, which provided students an excellent environment in pursuing knowledge," he shares. One standout memory involves late-night group projects in the computer laboratories, where his team set up camp with sleeping bags and toothbrushes to tackle a challenging assignment over a grueling 48-hour cycle. "Everyone worked diligently and strove for excellence in their academic areas," Peter adds, noting how such experiences forged the resilience that defines HKUST graduates today.

A Path to Leadership Inspired by Peers

Peter's involvement with HKUSTAA began with an invitation from the Past President Alvin Lam, sparking his commitment to the alumni community. Starting as a member of the Alumni Engagement Team, he organized networking events and alumni visits, later expanding to the Community Services Team for supporting social initiatives. "With Alvin’s passion for inspiring the alumni, I have started myself as one of the Alumni Engagement Team members," Peter explains.

Now, as President, he views the role as a "happy challenge" and an honor, drawing inspiration from predecessors like Alvin, Dicky Yuen, and Bennet Tsui. "As an Executive Committee of the A1 Team for over a decade, I believe our Presidents consistently devoted significant personal time and efforts in advancing alumni affairs," he says. Supported by equally passionate advisors and executive committees, Peter is eager to refine the year plans, collaborate closely with the University, and further strengthen the alumni community.

As a management consultant specializing in digital transformation, Peter brings his professional experience from sectors including finance, retail, entertainment, and consumer products. Known for his talkative nature and love of mingling across society, he enjoys countryside escapes and volunteer work during his free time—qualities that align well with A1's fun, energetic, and cohesive values.

Exciting Priorities and a Vision for Impact

Looking ahead, Peter is thrilled about HKUST's milestone in establishing Hong Kong's third Medical School, backed by the HKSAR Government. He envisions alumni contributions to bolster healthcare innovation and position Hong Kong as a global medical hub.

Strengthening the ties between alumni, students, and the University is another key goal, with A1 acting as the "middleman" among stakeholders like student societies, alumni groups, and HKUST. "Alumni, as old boys and girls, are invaluable assets to the University. They love their alma mater and cherish the experiences, friendships and memories formed with fellow schoolmates," Peter notes.

The Power of Staying Connected

Peter urges fellow alumni to remain engaged for their personal and professional growth. "Staying connected with like-minded is essential. I believe peers in the HKUST Family, whom we have spent years together, would be a strong and trusted network in giving you a hand whenever in need," he advises. From formal networking events, fun and social occasions, to community services and more, these interactions build lasting bonds and embody A1's core principle of "Alumni Inspire Alumni."
