From theatre enthusiast to video director

Eugene Chan is an engineering graduate, but what he does as a profession now has nothing to do with his study major.

He now leads a team of six at EuCan Productions, where he's the founder and CEO. The team works primarily with tech companies to produce premium videos that feature stunning visuals and creative storytelling.

Falling for theatre and filming

"I started developing an interest in photo taking when I was 13. When I got into high school, I fell for theatre and everything therein. It fired my passion for photography and videography, and I learned to use them to capture images, acts, and stories," says Eugene.

"At 17, I produced my first short film with a couple of high school buddies to celebrate our friendship," reminisces Eugene. "It's a story about how a deaf-mute boy communicates with the world. It assured my love and passion for filming, script writing, and storytelling."

Following one’s passion amidst peer pressure

During Eugene's undergrad years, his friends were clear about their career paths early on. Many wanted to become scientists, engineers, or doctors. While Eugene majored in industrial engineering, he remained passionate about filming and wanted to work in the creative industry.

"Choosing something wildly different from your peers can be stressful," recalls Eugene. "Especially when it goes against traditional values and family expectations."

A fun-first strategy

Fast forward to 2022. EuCan Productions is now a trusted video production partner of prominent tech companies, and has won several industry awards over the years. Eugene feels proud of the team and enjoys his work every day.

"We're lucky to have worked on many fun projects with clients who are receptive to our proposals. We can let our imagination go wild and get ideas to flow freely.”

Igniting creative flames in the younger generations

Besides commercial shooting, Eugene is eager to give back to the community. He and his team recently ran a series of filming workshops at select high schools. They taught attending students fundamental concepts and knowledge, then provided them with the necessary equipment to have a go at producing videos under guidance.

“Someday, we hope to set up a EuCan Foundation to contribute to the nurturing of future filming and creative talents," envisions Eugene. "Many talented young people have great original ideas. They just lack the capital, resources, or right networks to implement them, and that's where we may fill the gap."

Those happy, memorable university years

Speaking of his undergrad years at HKUST, Eugene is most grateful for the people he met along the way. Many of them have helped him get closer to who he is today.

"I made many short films at HKUST, including my first award-winning film. I wouldn't have created so many works without the support of my friends. They’re my hallmates, actors and actresses, and shooting crew at the same time,” laughs Eugene.

"I also want to thank the university’s Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions Office for being my first video production client. The experience was a confidence booster. It assured me I had what it takes to become a professional video director and producer."
