Inspired by the ground-breaking technology developed in Silicon Valley, Benny dreamed of creating a new product that could amaze the public. In 2009 he took the first step towards realizing his goal and partnered with classmates to establish SillyCube, an IT company that develops mobile applications.
It was a winding path for SillyCube to get to where it is today: it started out developing business-to-consumer applications, including a website for designing 3D e-cards, Facebook applications, and mobile games for Android, but found it difficult to convert usage of these applications to income. Another challenge was convincing traditional businesses to invest in new technology. To overcome these hurdles, SillyCube changed to providing business-to-business solutions for a variety of clients. Today, it is busy developing mobile applications and websites for customers ranging from local companies to multi-national organizations.
On top of managing SillyCube and keeping abreast of the newest technology trends around the world, Benny devotes much of his time and energy to his alma mater. He serves as the External Vice President, Community Service of the HKUST Alumni Association, helping organize events for youths, the elderly and minority groups. He is a Company Ambassador for the Alumni Association on the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council where he helps to run a School Company Parent Program in two local secondary schools. He is also a Mentor for the HKUST Computer Science and Engineering Alumni Association, sharing his valuable start-up experience with the next generation of students.
Benny's time at HKUST taught him diligence and endurance, traits which are invaluable to running his own business. He is also grateful for the supportive community of alumni entrepreneurs who have taught him much about investor relations, making a sales pitch, and more.
