To Matthew, becoming a pilot was a series of meticulously-planned steps since he first participated in the Cadet Pilot Program launched by Cathay Pacific during his final year at HKUST. Passionate about flying, he underwent vigorous training and recruitment procedures, including taking on the role of a ground staff at the Hong Kong Airport to gain more exposure to the aviation industry, and seizing the opportunity to obtain his commercial pilot license in Australia. He is currently living out his dream as a First Office with Cathay Pacific Airways.

Matthew appreciates his experience at HKUST for preparing him for his career. "Once passengers have boarded the plane, they rely on the pilots. Hence, we have to maintain a professionally high level of operational standards. It is no wonder that the job requires us to be disciplined, logical, physically and mentally fit and most importantly a good team player. The business education of HKUST equipped me with the necessary analytical, coordination, presentation and interpersonal skills," says Matthew.
