Celebrating the pursuit of financial freedom
Alvin Yu is an HKUST business graduate. He's now an independent equity trader and YouTuber who prides himself on a following of over 64,000 subscribers.
Alvin shares his views, insights, and know-how on personal finance management, stock trading, and investment on his channel. More recently, his content has included softer topics such as travel, philosophy, and quality of life.
From absolute layman to equity trader
“I first developed an interest in personal finance management and investment back in my freshman year, when I first read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad,” recalls Alvin. “I was deeply inspired by the concepts shared therein and decided it’s time to educate myself seriously on managing my money better.”
“When I continued to learn more from authors and opinion leaders in the field, I wanted to share them with people who wish to invest but don't know how to get started. And that's why I started a Youtube channel.”
In two years, Alvin grew a solid base of loyal followers on the platform. Alvin attributes his initial success to a down-to-earth attitude and a straightforward approach when presenting his content.
“I was not much different from any of my followers a few years ago -- an absolute layman. Hence, I relate to them well about the hiccups they'd face when taking those first steps in managing their finance and trading stocks.”
Winning the heart of followers
Alvin’s channel enjoys a high level of engagement. “I respond to every comment on my channel as fast and as best as possible,” explains Alvin. "I want to help people manage their finances better and, ideally, achieve financial freedom someday.” His willingness to interact with his audience on a personal level wins their hearts.
Two weeks ago, Alvin embarked on a month-long journey to Thailand. "I've always feared being alone in a foreign country. Hence I make this trip as a test for myself," explains Alvin. "It's also a mini-sabbatical for me to get to know myself better and reflect on my next moves."
"Plus, I'll be able to create some latest Thailand travel content for my channel as well," laughs Alvin.
A multifaceted learning experience that sets him apart
Speaking of his undergrad years at HKUST, Alvin is most grateful for the multifaceted learning experience that set him apart from the many locals discussing stock investing in Hong Kong.
"I benefitted greatly from the well-rounded education and close-knit community at HKUST. Becoming a successful investor requires multiple dimensions of knowledge, not just finance," shares Alvin.
Some future plans
Lately, Alvin has been expanding his reach beyond the local stock market by tapping into US stocks. He also plans to enrich his offer by introducing podcasts and bringing in guests that'll offer a wide array of viewpoints. Stay tuned!
