BSc(ECOF)

Thomas joined Hang Seng Bank in 2007 and was promoted to Chief Economist in 2017.  Specializing in macroeconomic research, his primary responsibilities include analyzing economic developments in the US, Europe, mainland China and Hong Kong; providing economic forecasts and writing research reports.  He has covered topics as varied as the 2008 US financial turmoil, the Eurozone debt crisis, Japan's monetary policy and financial reform on the Mainland. He was recently ranked first in the China GDP category in the Best Economic Forecaster Awards presented by the 2017 Focus Economics Analyst Forecast Awards.

Looking back at his time as a University student, he is thankful to HKUST for providing him with textbook knowledge and the opportunity to meet many enthusiastic and inspiring professors. He also enjoyed the diversity on campus and the brilliant learning environment.

Thomas has long been interested in becoming an Economist: to him, being an Economist is all about explaining human behaviors. He stressed the importance of “learning by doing” at work, and also, shared that one should be positive when faced with difficulties as attitude is the most important element in one's career. “Even when we make mistakes, we can still learn from them and avoid making the same mistakes again. This is how we can overcome our weakness and improve our work quality,”he says.
