Oscar Tao is an extraordinary talent whose journey encompasses music, entrepreneurship, and the arts. A singer-songwriter, classical pianist, TV host, and the co-founder of two AI-driven dental startups, Oscar exemplifies the diverse opportunities afforded by HKUST.
Oscar’s musical talent blossomed at five, leading him through formal training at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and a scholarship at Harrow School in the UK. Graduating with First Class Honors from HKUST's Global Business program, he initially set his sights on finance. However, the program's interdisciplinary approach encouraged him to explore his passions more broadly.
“My time at HKUST taught me to look beyond traditional paths,” Oscar reflects. At HKUST, he engaged in various creative projects, culminating in a pivotal audition for a TV talent show in 2019 that earned him a recording contract with Universal Music. His performance alongside the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hong Kong Coliseum in 2024 marked a significant highlight, allowing him to connect with the city’s rich musical heritage.
Oscar's entrepreneurial spirit thrived at HKUST, leading him to co-found DBT Technology Limited and Lulusmiles Medical Technology Limited. His ventures utilize AI to enhance dental care accessibility, creating machine learning models that transform 2D images into 3D visualizations.
“The path was challenging, but seeing Lulusmiles receive the HKUST Track Silver Award validated our efforts,” he shares.
Balancing his artistic and entrepreneurial pursuits, Oscar emphasizes the importance of following his instincts. “I embrace the flow of creativity,” he says, whether he is brainstorming new business strategies or preparing for performances.
For younger alumni, Oscar’s advice is clear: “Stay true to your values and trust your instincts. Your unique journey is shaped by your own experiences. Explore fearlessly; that’s how you will find your voice in both music and entrepreneurship.”
