We have been keeping busy throughout the year. Check out what we have been up to of late — you may even be inspired to join events in 2024.
A-OK with A1

The HKUST Alumni Association (A1) has held a plethora of events this year to get everyone in the mood for fun. The HKUSTAA Charity Alumni Dinner was held on November 20 at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club with a “Heroes Among Us” theme. The evening included a speech by President Prof. Nancy Ip for honoring unsung heroes in our alumni community. Thanks to the generous contributions of the lead sponsors and the support from the HKUST Convocation, all the participation fees have been donated to the HKUST Alumni Endowment Fund, enriching the university life of our students. Other fun initiatives included the “Diving Quest” that saw alumni explore the hidden depths of Sai Kung waters on October 15, and a “Clay Class” volunteer service that saw A1 partner with the Fuk Loi Integrated Community Development Centre to hold clay classes for kids on August 5.

The Alumni Dragon Boat Club has been paddling to victory this year, with races including Tsuen Wan Dragon Boat Race, Tuen Ng Festival Dragon Boat Race, Tai O Small Dragon Boat Race, Tsuen Wan West (Hoi On) Small Dragon Boat Race 2023, 2023 Kwun Tong Dragon Boat Race and Kwai Tsing District Dragon Boat Race. In Vino Veritas

The Alumni Wine Association has been making sure everyone has a full glass. The Association partnered with Cathay Pacific for the 15th Cathay Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition on September 21, with a “Test Your Palate” activation. The event was a wonderful moment for participants to enjoy award-winning wines and spirits from different countries. Other events held this year included a "Wine Tasting" poker game on June 1 and a California wine workshop held on July 22 with WSET Certified Wine & Spirit Educator and Assessor
Mr. Lawrence Chan. And there is more excitement to come, with the team heading to France for the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup 2024, in which HKUST has frequently represented Hong Kong over the last few years.

MEGA STEM Initiative Inspires

The Mechanical Engineering Graduates’ Association certainly knows how to organize mega initiatives. Their STEM education program “Fly Me to Engineers’ Dream” ran from April to July, providing an immersive STEM education experience for primary school students from underprivileged backgrounds. While students attended the workshops, parents participated in STEM-related career seminars, sharing sessions by engineering graduates, as well as campus and laboratory tours at HKUST. Through these activities, parents gained a better understanding of the significance of STEM education and the overall landscape of technology development in Hong Kong. The program inspires children from disadvantaged backgrounds to dream big for their future.

A Year to Remember

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association has been busy this year. On October 27, the Association sponsored a table at the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Civil Annual Dinner. Together with another table kindly sponsored by immediate past president, Derrick Leung from Yee Hop Engineering Co. Ltd. The team showed full support to civil alumnus Simon Ng, Chairman of the HKIE Civil Division. The Association was thrilled to kick off a mentorship program on November 4. The program is supported by 20 alumni mentors and coordinators, with over 50 mentees.

Electric Feel

The Electronic and Computer Engineering Alumni Association held a sharing on September 22, showcasing the topic of “MTR Railway Signaling Journey”. The evening included a very special dinner, with attendees including professors. To top this, it went a step further and held its Alumni Anniversary Dinner on November 11 in Fo Tan, with beautiful food and wine, lucky draws, and great times with professors and alumni.

Foundations of Success

The Engineering Enterprise Management Alumni Association Residential Program 2023 was held on August 27. With the resumption of the residential program for students by the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics, it hosted a one-day program to teach interactive and presentation skills. A total of 60 new students attended. In addition to this, it held a “Job Transformation” forum hosted by Mr. Christopher Tse on September 16. Speakers included Mr. Herbert Lee from Bain & Co., Mr. Jeff Li from McKinsey & Co., and Mr. Jeffrey Chan from CLSA, who provided invaluable insights to our students. To top off the action, a Japanese Niigata Ramen & Mid-Autumn Festival gathering event was held on September 22 with food, sake, and friends, making for a terrific time.
