Guangzhou Here We Come

Standing Committee Members of the HKUST Convocation and representatives of the alumni associations visited HKUST (Guangzhou) in May, keeping abreast of its latest developments with its President, Prof. Lionel Ni. They also took this opportunity to tour the HKUST SZ-HK Collaborative Innovation Research Institute and the Shenzhen Research Institute.



The Fun Never Stops

A special viewing of Lost Love hosted by the HKUST Alumni Association (A1) on March 9 saw alumni director Ka Sing Fung and actor Alan Luk attending, while its members and friends participated in a coaching session by coach Erik Kwok, from the Hong Kong Sevens team, at the HKUST x CITY RFC Rugby Fun Night in the following week.

On March 29, the Web3 Night allowed enthusiasts to talk about all things crypto, tokens, blockchain and decentralized web. In April, A1 visited the Tsz Shan Monastery. The day included a visit to the monastery, a museum tour, and a meditation session. On April 25, the IT & Big Data Meet-and-Greet Dinner saw computer science, data science, AI, and other IT experts meet, and alumni finance professionals shared insights and views on the latest trends on May 25. The Inclusive Para Sports Day also took place in the same month.

Dragon Determination

The Alumni Dragon Boat Club was crowned champion of the Kwun Tong Dragon Boat Race Silver Cup Open Competition in April, which marks their first victory since the end of the pandemic. At the Dragon Boat Festival, they beat some very strong competition to finish fourth in one of the small boat competitions.

Go Golfing

The Alumni Golf Club gathered on the greens for a friendly game at New Course Fanling in May. Another gathering was held on the same course in June.

All Together Now

The University Choir Alumni Association joined founding conductor Mr. Chiang Wai Man and current conductor Mr. Francis Mok, during shooting of the music video for the HKUST’s first ever official anthem in March. There was also an annual dinner in April, a fun occasion complete with music.



Healthy Pursuits

The Mainland Alumni Association joined outdoor bicycling at Tai Mei Tuk in March, followed by a barbecue. Meanwhile, the Alumni Spring Tea Chat in April was co-organized with the HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute, featuring a ChatGPT theme, with a Chinese tea tasting.



Terrific Toasting

The MBA Alumni Toastmasters Club kicked off 2023 with its first meeting featuring prepared speeches and a Table Topic session in January. It was followed by a series of fabulous events in the following months including a New Member Speech Night, regular meetings, a New Member Welcome Night, a special guest workshop on Harnessing the Power of the Big Four Leadership Archetypes, and a Speech Marathon.

Rowing to Win

More than 120 Rowing Club alumni and coaches gathered at the Club’s Gala Dinner held in April to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Rowing Club. Prof. King Chow, Acting Dean of Students, alongside other guests of honor, celebrated this milestone with them.



All We Need is Wine

The Alumni Wine Association had its annual dinner with a selection of wine and delicious Chinese cuisine, blind tasting sessions, and a lucky draw. They were thrilled to have our Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Prof. Yang Wang, as their guest of honor. There was also Free Flow Drinks held on April 19, with 4 wines specially selected by a sommelier.

Another wine tasting, this time with the Electronic & Computer Engineering Alumni Association in April. They were honored to have Prof. Ross Murch, Prof. Bertram Shi, and Adjunct Prof. Justin Chuang, the Vice President of Communications Technologies of ASTRI, in attendance.

On February 11, there was also an Expert-Talk on IP Best Practice event for startups and MNCs featured three distinguished guest speakers: Ms. Priscilla Yeung, Director of Commercialization at ASTRI, Mr. Zephyr Su, Partner at Marks & Clerk, and Mr. John Chung, Associate - Patent at Spruson & Ferguson.
